Hothouse

Last night the roommate and I went to this really cool event sponsored by Sprout Fund called Hothouse. It is their 7th annual benefit and showcase event-
"Held annually at unique development sites, the event celebrates the organization’s accomplishments and features live music and performances, food and drink by Pittsburgh favorites, a silent auction, and a VIP reception.

As The Sprout Fund’s “live annual report” to the community, the event creates an incredible opportunity for the wide cross-section of Pittsburgh’s business and social circles that come together each year in support of Sprout’s mission to meet and mingle."

Sarah's friend is a DJ and member of Philadelphyinz who was performing at the event and got us in. The event took place at the old Nabisco factory. There were vendors there with great samples of food and drink, as well as very interesting art pieces from local artists.

Following the event we went with the Philadelphyinz to a local dive bar. We were pleasantly surprised when we walked in and people were ROLLER SKATING! It was hilarious to watch. I'm finding that Pittsburgh has a very diverse and rich cultural experience and plenty of opportunities to partake in such amazing events.

One Week

Well, I've been here for a week now, and I'm still working on settling in. I still have some unpacking to do, but surprise surprise I've managed to put some of those things off.
My car hasn't arrived. I shipped my car through Dependable Auto Shippers and the original estimate on arrive was last Tuesday. As of right now, it has an estimated arrival date of Wednesday. I'm really hoping this is true b/c orientation begins Thursday and lasts for 2 days, all day. So turns out they're not so dependable after all.
But getting around hasn't been too difficult. Luckily there are a lot of restaurants and cafes within walking distance. The roommate and I attempted to ride the bus yesterday to go have brunch. We unknowingly stood on the wrong side of the street for 20 minutes. Once we realized we needed to go across the street, our bus came, but we didn't have enough money for a transfer. But once we get our student id's we'll be able to ride for free. I'm still going to need to study up so I know which side of the street I need to be on.
Tonight we went to this really cool indoor rock climbing gym called The Climbing Wall Inc. I haven't been rock climbing in over a year, so we were just bouldering within the gym. It was a lot of fun, but I was starting to feel it in my hands pretty quickly. Hopefully when I go back we'll be able to belay and do some more climbing.

I've made it to my apt and am settling in. The kitchen needs some cleaning but other than that all is well. I love the view out my back window.

Day of travel

The day has finally come! I'm heading to Pittsburgh with just a quick stop in Chicago. All is packed and on its way. Was disappointed to find out yesterday that my car has only made it as far as TX. Just hoping it makes it there safe and sound.
I spent my last day enjoying some great CA features- Mexican food and in n out. It was lovely and will have to hold me over until thanksgiving!

Testing my mobile capabilities.

This is my beautiful and loving pup Hannah Banana who I will be missing very much during my year away. She doesn't know yet that she'll be missing me and our walks very soon

The Move

I'm becoming a Californian Transplant. In that, I mean I'm leaving the glorious weather, all my friends and family, and Mexican food, and moving all the way to Pittsburgh, PA to attend the University of Pittsburgh. So far, reactions have been pretty similar when I tell people that I'm moving out of state. The weather is ALWAYS brought up. So yes, I will be experiencing real winter now. That should be interesting for the girl who is always cold. But I am excited for my new adventure and all the new experiences that await me. I'm also looking forward to the next stage of my journey that will allow me to pursue my career in Library Science once I complete my masters.
I'm 11 days away from the big move. I have 4 completely packed boxes. There are about half a dozen space bags at the foot of my bed with clothes ready to be packed. The rest of my room is a mess, but that's not too unusual. I just have to get through the rest, figure out what I need and get a move on.
Wish me luck!
